The answer you need right away
May-June and September-October are the most recommended periods for walking the Way of St. Francis: milder temperatures and good walking days.
That said: every season has its advantages. If you’re planning ahead (and want to choose wisely), here’s everything you need to know.
At a Glance: Weather, Crowds and Seasonal Highlights
March–April Weather: variable, more rain and slippery trails Crowds: low Why it makes sense: intense green, lower prices, very peaceful atmosphere
May–June Weather: mild, long days Crowds: medium Why it makes sense: the best overall compromise, good climate and nature at its peak
July–August Weather: hot, especially in the valleys Crowds: high Why it makes sense: more services open, longest daylight hours, but heat and crowds
September–October Weather: mild to cool, beautiful light Crowds: medium Why it makes sense: second top window, less heat, autumn flavours
November–February Weather: cold, short days Crowds: very low Why it makes sense: for those who want total solitude and don’t mind mud and weather
Weather reference (based on average data for Perugia, which gives a good idea of the Umbrian heart of the route):
- May: min ≈ 9 °C (48 °F), max ≈ 22 °C (72 °F)
- June: min ≈ 12 °C (54 °F), max ≈ 26 °C (79 °F)
- September: min ≈ 13 °C (55 °F), max ≈ 26 °C (79 °F)
- October: min ≈ 9 °C (48 °F), max ≈ 20 °C (68 °F)
So:
- May–June is comfortably walkable without excessive heat, with plenty of daylight
- September–October is fresher, often more stable, and nights start to feel properly cool
Practical note: in summer the heat in the valley bottoms can become heavy – start early in the morning and always carry plenty of water.
Crowds and atmosphere: when it’s busiest If you want a less touristy experience, avoid the peak summer months: July and August are the most crowded periods.
- Low crowds: March–April, November–winter
- Medium crowds: May–June, September–October
- High crowds: July–August (and weekends/holidays on the most popular stages)
Choose your window according to what matters most to you: green freshness, golden autumn, solitude or lively companionship along the way.
And if your path brings you through the Valtiberina (Citerna is the first Umbrian stage!), come and recharge at La Cisterna in the main square: a good platter, bruschetta and a glass of wine are waiting for you.
Buon Cammino!
