Anghiari is one of the iconic villages of the Tuscan Valtiberina: a historic centre built in stone, full of medieval corners and a beautiful walkway along the ancient walls. It is forever linked to the Battle of Anghiari in 1440, one of the most famous historical events in the area.

Anghiari, walls, views and history
Anghiari is a compact, highly walkable village made of narrow lanes, steep climbs and lovely viewpoints. The classic route starts in the centre and ends on the Via di Ronda, the old external walkway along the walls: an easy stroll, yet full of breathtaking views that immediately show why this place stays in your memory.
Here history is not just a sign on the wall: the famous Battle of Anghiari (1440) took place in the plain below the village, and the town still tells its story through museums and themed trails. If you love craftsmanship, don't miss the Mostra Mercato dell’Artigianato della Valtiberina Toscana (Arts & Crafts Fair of the Tuscan Valtiberina), usually held between late April and early May.

What to Visit in Anghiari
- Museo della Battaglia e di Anghiari (Palazzo del Marzocco) The real heart of the visit: entirely dedicated to the famous Battle of 1440 and to Leonardo da Vinci’s lost masterpiece. You’ll find preparatory drawings, copies of the fresco (including Rubens’ famous one), historical artefacts, ancient weapons and a very effective digital immersive experience that finally lets you “see” the lost work of art. Tickets: approx. €6–8 (often combined with other museums) Opening hours: usually 9:30–13:00 and 14:30–18:30 (always check battaglia.anghiari.it for 2026 updates).

- Historic Centre & Palazzo Pretorio Piazza del Popolo with the splendid Palazzo Pretorio (14th century), covered in the coats of arms of the ancient podestà and still preserving a beautiful 15th-century fresco. From here, narrow lanes, steep stairways and the Torre dell’Orologio (the Cassero) lead you to wonderful viewpoints over the battle plain and distant Sansepolcro.
- Museo Statale di Palazzo Taglieschi One of the most beautiful small art museums in the Upper Tiber Valley. Sculptures by Jacopo della Quercia and the Della Robbia family, exquisite Renaissance paintings and sacred art objects. Ideal if you love medieval and early Renaissance religious art.
- Other Must-See Corners Chiesa di Sant’Agostino (with its elegant apse and pointed bell tower) Badia di San Bartolomeo Artisan workshops and local food shops (honey, pecorino cheese, finocchiona salami) Wherever you turn, the view opens onto the beautiful Valtiberina valley.
Anghiari is one of those places where every corner tells a story — and the view from the walls never disappoints.
