Citerna: what to see in the panoramic village of Valtiberina

Citerna is our village: a small, magical medieval town perched on a hill that overlooks the Valtiberina, right on the border between Umbria and Tuscany. Here, among narrow lanes and views that bring instant peace to the soul, you’ll find La Cisterna, our food shop and refreshment spot, deeply rooted in the traditions of the village. It’s a slow, authentic place, perfect for anyone seeking silence, history and genuine flavours. From pilgrims walking the Way of St. Francis to curious travellers, Citerna welcomes you with the gentle rhythm of home. And we are here, ready to let you taste a real piece of this beautiful borgo.

A Glimpse of History

Citerna has ancient roots: founded in Roman times as Civitas Sobariae, it developed in the Middle Ages as a strategic stronghold overlooking the Valtiberina, protected by mighty walls and an imposing cistern designed to withstand long sieges. From the 13th century it became a free commune, later passing under the Malatesta family and the Papal State, with a history marked by contested borders between Umbria and Tuscany. The medieval cistern (from which we take our name) is a masterpiece of 14th-century engineering: an underground reservoir 15 metres deep that collected rainwater for the entire village. Today Citerna proudly holds the Bandiera Arancione (Italian Touring Club quality seal) and is one of the Borghi più belli d’Italia — a true Umbrian treasure with a soul that blends history, spirituality (as a stop on the Way of St. Francis) and nature, without the crowds of mass tourism.

What to See in Citerna

  • The Medieval Cistern The true symbol of the village and the inspiration behind our name: a fascinating underground work with cross vaults and a mysterious atmosphere. Open to the public with guided tours, it feels like stepping back in time. This is exactly where you’ll understand the origin of our name – and afterwards, stop by La Cisterna for a platter that truly tastes of these ancient roots!
  • Underground Passages and Sala degli Ammassi A real medieval labyrinth beneath the village: rock-hewn walkways used for defence and storage. The Sala degli Ammassi is a hidden gem, with its impressive vaults and a genuine sense of adventure. Guided tours are organised by the Municipality (check times on citerna.net or the Umbria Tourism app; tickets around €5). Perfect for anyone who loves exploration and hidden history.
