Città di Castello

Città di Castello is just around the corner: it’s only a 15-minute drive from Citerna to step into a small town full of history, museums, Renaissance palaces and corners to explore on foot. Ideal for a half-day trip or to pair with the quiet of our village.

The historic center unfolds between Piazza Matteotti and Piazza Gabriotti, with the Cathedral of Saints Florido and Amanzio and its cylindrical Romanesque bell tower standing out in the distance. If you love art and architecture, don’t miss Palazzo Vitelli (Palazzo Vitelli alla Cannoniera) and the Municipal Art Gallery. And then there’s the contemporary touch: the Fondazione Palazzo Albizzini Collezione Burri, dedicated to Alberto Burri, with works well worth seeing. Perfect for a half day.

What to see in Città di Castello

  • Cathedral of Saints Florido and Amanzio (Duomo)
A landmark in the city center on Piazza Gabriotti. Inside, frescoes and details that tell centuries of history. Outside, the cylindrical Romanesque bell tower is one of the most photographed views in the Valtiberina.
  • Palazzo Vitelli alla Cannoniera
One of the city’s most beautiful Renaissance palaces, with gardens and frescoed rooms. Part of the historic circuit and often home to exhibitions.
  • Pinacoteca Comunale
Housed in historic buildings, with a sgraffito façade designed by Vasari. Here you’ll find paintings from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, a great journey through Umbrian and Tuscan art.
  • Fondazione Palazzo Albizzini Collezione Burri
The highlight for contemporary art lovers. Works by Alberto Burri (born nearby) in an atmospheric space. For tickets and opening hours, check the official website: fondazioneburri.org.

If, before or after visiting Città di Castello, you get hungry for real flavors, come back to Citerna: we’ll be waiting with boards, bruschetta and a glass of local wine.

Enjoy your visit!
